Abstract

Set in the reflexive perspective on the diachronic analysis of specialized varieties of languages and cultures, this paper aims to contribute to the study of the various written genres of the specialized domain of mountaineering by considering the constants in the founding texts of the specialized community of US mountaineers. It is based on a primary classification of the genres and aspects of the texts written by mountaineers, more specifically non-fictional literature, climbing stories and their recurring narrative tracks. Indeed, climbing stories are undoubtedly the most common genre in mountaineering literature. These tales of adventure and solidarity, friendship and treason, passion and death in hostile environment gather the various components required to meet a very large audience.
